Q & A with Jo Howard (Dental Nurse)

This month’s Q & A style interview is with Jo Howard one of our new dental nurses.

Why did you want to be a dental nurse?

I have always wanted to work in the healthcare sector as I find looking after the health and wellbeing of others really rewarding.

One day, when I was a patient at my local dentist; I was watching the nurses greeting patients and I realised that a career as a dental nurse might be for me.

Where did you study/train and when did you qualify?

My first practice was a large busy NHS practice that provided me with excellent in-house training including attending the NEBDN (National Examining Board for Dental Nurses) Dental Nurses course which I completed in one year.

What do you like best about your job?

Providing patients especially those who are nervous or dental phobic complex restorative treatment such as dental implants is very rewarding because it can be life-changing.

How long have you been working at Arnica?

I joined Arnica in September 2016 shortly after their expansion to include two new surgeries and dental teams.

What do you like best about working at Arnica?

I feel very lucky to be working with such a happy friendly team committed to putting the individual needs of patients before anything else.  I also value being part a team that specialises in advanced dental treatment as there is never a dull moment.

How do you help patients to relax?

I have found that the best way to help patients relax is to be happy and relaxed myself and to reassure them that we will be looking after them every step of the way.

What are your top tips for tip top oral health and wellbeing?

I have found that the best way to look after your oral health and wellbeing is to have a healthy balanced diet, have regular check-ups and hygiene appointments, brush with an electric tooth brush twice a day, use interdental brushes or floss at least once a day and to keep discolouration at bay with a gentle whitening tooth pastes such as Sensodyne Gentle Whitening.

What do you like doing in your spare time?

I enjoy keeping fit with circuit training and walks in the surrounding countryside. I love spending time with family and friends especially enjoying good food in locally-owned restaurants.
