Dental sedation

Whether you are nervous, anxious or dental-phobic we will provide you with a number of sedation options that will put you into a relaxed, dreamlike state during surgery.

Sedation is simply a way to help control your anxiety which will make your treatment more comfortable. During sedation, you will feel pleasantly drowsy and relaxed, but you will still be able to co-operate with your dentist.

We offer three types of sedation:

1.  Intravenous sedation – Sedation is given via a plastic tube in your arm or the back of your hand

2.  Inhalation sedation – Sedation is given via a special mixture of sedative gas and air

3.  Oral sedation – Sedation is given via a tablet taken before your appointment

Whichever type of sedation is best for you, rest assured that our fully qualified and experienced team are there to help you. Sedation is effective, predictable and very safe.

Preparing for treatment with sedation

Intravenous sedation (IV) and inhalation sedation (IS) are powerful yet very safe ways of reducing your anxiety. However there are a number of important steps to follow.

We have written a short guide to preparing for treatment with sedation, here is a summary:

  1. Don’t eat or drink anything for up to two hours before your appointment
  2. Give details of any medicines or tablets you are taking, both with and without prescription
  3. Continue to take your routine medicines unless otherwise advised by your dentist
  4. Let us know if you’ve seen your doctor or been to hospital since your last appointment
  5. Let us know if you think you may be pregnant or if you are breastfeeding
